MEETING MINUTES…WHITEHALL BOARD OF EDUCATION…December 20, 2017

The December 20, 2017 meeting of the Whitehall Board of Education was held at Whitehall Memorial Elementary Balcony. President, George Everson called the meeting to order at

6:30 pm. Roll was called and a quorum established. Other Board members present: Byron Fields, Jason Molis, Kristen Carroll, Julie Dokkestul and Dan Koxlien. Absent: Leah Johnson. Others present: Superintendent/9-12 Principal, Mike Beighley; Elementary Principal, Damon Lisowski; Special Education/Pupil Services Director, Vickie O’Dell; MS Principal/Improvement of Instruction Director, Beth Lisowski; Assistant HS Principal/Athletic Director, Jamie Youngbauer; Finance Manager, Cheryl Maug.

Fields moved to approve vouchers as presented. Molis seconded. Aye – All members. Motion carried.

Dokkestul moved to approve the following items of the Motion Calendar:

  • Approve minutes of November 15, 2017 Regular Meeting
  • Approve minutes of November 15, 2017 Executive Meeting
  • Approve minutes of October 18, 2017 Executive Meeting
  • Approve Extended Contracts for 2017-18: Drew Anderson – 10 days, Melinda Goplin 31 days, Delaine Stendahl – 5 days, Colleen Cantlon-Marler 20 days

Carroll seconded. Aye – All Members. Motion carried.

The Joint Board Meeting for TVC 2.0 is scheduled for January 10, 2018. A draft of the Joint Powers Agreement will be reviewed at the meeting. A demonstration for the Vex Robotic competition will be set up for the joint board to view that evening. The competition will be held at Whitehall Schools on January 27th with 20-24 teams competing.

The STEM Trailer has been tentatively approved by Ashley and should be delivered mid-August. The trailer will first be set up at Whitehall and will be moved quarterly to other Co-op schools. Details of what type of equipment and the corresponding curriculum are yet to be determined.

The Board is considering adding 2-3 days of summer school in August before the start of the 2018-19 school year.

Beighley reported on the state teacher licenses changes. Professional development (credits, PDP plans) are no longer required and the life license has returned. Social Studies and Science licenses are no longer broken down into specific licenses for these subjects; a Social Studies and Science license holder can teach in any area of these subjects. Two year Technical College Degree holders can now substitute.

Administrative Reports:

B. Lisowski –

Teacher, Jason Wadzinski is in the process of establishing a Fishing Club. The club will run from January to early March for Middle/High School students. CLC Grant has purchased supplies and Wadzinski has contacted corporate sponsors for donations. The High School students will enter competition all over the state of Wisconsin through the Wisconsin Interscholastic Fishing Association (WIFA).

O’Dell –

Special Education population has been stable over the past years (currently at 105). Some of the needs are changing and some restructuring may be possible in the near future to best meet the needs of the students.

D. Lisowski –

The elementary has been using Math Expressions curriculum for the past 6-7 years. In order to continue with this curriculum (new) staff would need training, curriculum upgraded to 2018 version or go to something completely different. Met with Houghton Mifflin and it was decided to upgrade to the 2018 version with a 6-year upgrade agreement to be paid over 3 years at a cost of approximately $40,000.

A 6-year Science curriculum for grades 3-5 has also been purchased for approximately $12,000. The Science curriculum will match up with the Middle School Science curriculum that was purchased last year.

Youngbauer –

The Middle/High School will be going to Eau Claire on Friday 12/22 to see “Wonder”. The book has been used in the past to help teach empathy and tolerance. There will be no cost to the students and they will be able to purchase popcorn and a soda for $1.50. They will return to school at approximately 1:00 and have a late lunch. After lunch, the students will meet with their ACP advisors to discuss and reflect on the movie.

Everson recessed to Executive session pursuant to S.S. 19.85 1(c) to discuss renewal of Administrative Contracts for 2018-2020. Time: 7:21 pm.
