MEETING MINUTES…WHITEHALL BOARD OF EDUCATION…July 19, 2017
The July 19, 2017 meeting of the Whitehall Board of Education was held at Whitehall Memorial Elementary Balcony. President, George Everson called the meeting to order at
6:30 pm. Roll was called and a quorum established. Other Board members present: Byron Fields, Jason Molis, and Kristen Carroll. Absent: Leah Johnson, Julie Dokkestul and Dan Koxlien. Others present: Superintendent/9-12 Principal, Mike Beighley; Elementary Principal, Damon Lisowski; Special Education/Pupil Services Director, Vickie O’Dell; MS Principal/Improvement of Instruction Director, Beth Lisowski; Assistant HS Principal/Athletic Director, Jamie Youngbauer; Finance Manager, Cheryl Maug; Reporter, Scott Schultz.
Fields moved to approve vouchers as presented. Carroll seconded. Aye – All members. Motion carried.
Fields moved to approve the following items of the Motion Calendar:
- Approve minutes of June 28, 2017 Regular Meeting
- Set date/time for Budget Hearing & Annual Meeting: October 18, 2017 at 6:30 pm.
- Set dates and times for Regular Board of Education Meetings: continue with 3rd Wednesday at 6:30 pm.
Carroll seconded. Aye – All Members. Motion carried.
Molis moved to approve Open Enrollment Alt Apps and SPED waiting list for 2017-18 school year. Carroll seconded. Aye – All Members. Motion carried.
Carroll moved to no change in activity ticket prices for 2017-18: K-6 = $7, Gr. 7-8 = $12, Gr. 9-12 = $17, Adult $30 and Senior Citizens (Age 62) Free Lifetime Pass. Molis seconded. Aye – All Members. Motion carried.
Molis moved to approve no change to the school lunch and milk prices and to increase Breakfast meal prices $.15 for 2017-18 school year. Elementary (through Grade 6) $1.75, Jr/Sr High (Grades 7-12) $2.00, Adult $2.55.
Carroll moved to approve the academic standards to be used for the 2017-18 school year as published in the public notice. Molis seconded. Aye – All Members. Motion carried.
B. Lisowski presented the 2017-18 Staff inservice plans for August: Back to School day August 30th, 4-School joint inservice 31st, Freshman & 7th grade orientation, 12/ day of CESA ACP training for 6-12 teachers, Tyler Petersen and school nurse to present CPR training/certification, T-shirt delivery to students.
Beighley reported that the 4 school co-op transportation issues have been worked out. All four schools will provide transportation for the first week. Parent letters for students taking Co-op classes will be sent out. Meeting potentially scheduled with Governor on July 27th and Presidents from UW & Technical College Systems, State Superintendent (DPI), Ron Wanek and Jim Dotta.
Administrative Reports:
D. Lisowski –
The District has been raising funds to construct an Outdoor Learning Center. A few miscellaneous donations have been received along with a school fundraising event (Glo-run) and a golf fundraising event sponsored by Whitehall Specialties. Enough funds have been collected to begin the construction. Maintenance Director, David Blaha, and other staff poured ½ of the concrete slab. Plans have been drawn up for the shelter with hopes that all can be completed before the start of the 2017-18 school year.
O’Dell –
Special Education enrollment at the end of 2016-17 school year was at 105. This number is consistent with past years in the range of 105-115 students.
Additions for 2017-18 known at this time: a High School student from Blair-Taylor and two 3 yr.
B. Lisowski –
Presented Science and Social Studies textbook/curriculum materials for prospective purchase for the 2017-18 school year. The current science textbooks are 2003 & 2004 editions. A new program, taught in 12 modules and completely online has been chosen for grades 6 – 8. This new “Next Generation Standards” version also includes an engineering and design component. No workbooks will be purchased because the purchase includes a pdf version that can be printed, if necessary. The cost is approximately $21,000 and includes online updates for 6 years.
The cost for new 7th & 8th grade Social Studies textbooks is estimated at $13,000.
Still waiting on costs for 8th & 9th grade social studies textbooks.
Board consented to the purchase of Science and Social Studies materials upon completed planning by administration.
Youngbauer –
Bess will be arriving for the School-run Honey Business next spring. McConnell will be ordering more bee suits and smokers. Hive construction will begin this fall. The honey business will also be expanded to include the CLC After School Program.
